The alternative to the small group (08 persons) Rwanda gorilla trekking experience is the exclusive Rwanda Gorilla Trekking which Cost USD1,5000 for travellers to privately trek a particular gorilla family. Alternatively, for persons that would like to an exclusive gorilla trekking experience of only 4 persons tracking a group of wild mountain gorillas in the company of a team of researchers, should consider booking the gorilla habituation experience. Unlike the mountain gorilla trekking explained above, the gorilla habituation experience is an extraordinary experience that can only be done in Uganda ( Bwindi forest National park ) and nowhere else in the world. Mountain Gorilla Habituation is a full day gorilla trekking experience that allows trekkers to spend up to four hours in the presence of a wild gorilla family – still undergoing habituation. Decide where to go trekking: There are currently three (03) places in the world where you can go Mountain gorilla trekking. These are Uganda, Rwanda and DR. Congo. For anyone to go gorilla trekking in any one of the three (03) countries mentioned, you must have a gorilla permit. In Rwanda, a gorilla tracking permit costs USD1,500 per person to trek and spend one (01) hour with a group of habituated Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.
In Uganda, a gorilla tracking permit costs $700 per person on the traditional one (01) gorilla trekking experience in either Bwindi Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
From the two (02) safest mountain gorilla trekking destinations; Rwanda and Uganda, you will have to decide/choose one that suits your budget.
DIY – do it yourself or use a tour Operator: If you are a DIY – Do it yourself tourist who might consider booking their own permits and accommodation and then get to Uganda, hop onto public transport or even hire a self-drive to Bwindi or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park you are up for not do difficult but rather challenging experience, not for the faint-hearted.
The challenges that lie ahead: Road signage in Uganda and Africa, in general, is quite confusing so it might be “interesting” (frustrating) trying to figure out where to go.
