What is the best time for gorilla trekking? This is a common question we often get from travelers intending to go gorilla trekking in Africa, it is perhaps the reason you also stumbled on this post. The argument on when it is the best time for gorilla trekking is quite interesting to discuss, we are going to do our very best in helping you decide when to go gorilla trekking.

Gorilla trekking is an all-year-round activity, however, knowing the best time might be helpful In since the seasons are different, and each does come with its upside (advantage) and downside (disadvantage).

The best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda revolves around the dry and wet seasons – often referred to as the low & peak season. Both Rwanda & Uganda share an almost similar dry & wet season pattern. These both experience two wet seasons; short & long wet seasons. The short wet season is in the months of October into November. The long wet season starts mid-march and stretches into May.  The remaining months a dry.

Understanding Gorilla Trekking Seasons – Low Season Versus Peak Season

  • The Peak Season for gorilla trekking:

January, February, July, August, September, and November are Peak Season months for both Rwanda & Uganda. These months experience little or no rainfall and are often when most travelers prefer to go gorilla trekking. However,

Why do people prefer the Peak Season months?

Most travelers prefer the peak season months of January, February, July, August, September, and November because there is little or no rain at all. The trails are therefore drier and less slippery to navigate.

The disadvantage of trekking gorillas in the peak season is that accommodation prices are high and often non–negotiable even for us as tour operators.

Gorilla permits in the peak season are often a hassle to book – they are usually sold out six (06) months in advance.

The Low Season for gorilla trekking:

March, April, May & November is the low season. The rainfall in the low season is the major deterrent to gorilla trekking. However, if you pack wisely, then you should be fine trekking gorillas in the rain. The trails can be slippery and challenging (not impossible) to navigate.

The advantage of trekking mountain gorillas in the low season months of March. April, May, and November are when you get to save up to 30% on accommodation, and other safari-related costs. Lodges/ hotels offer low-season discounts on accommodation, and tour Operators like Realm Africa Safaris™ equally offer discounted rates on Low season Gorilla Safaris
