Mahale Mountains National Park is set among the spectacular, forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains, the park protects approximately 800 chimpanzees that inhabit the region. It is renowned for its fantastic sunsets over Lake Tanganyika, which makes it an essential stop for keen photographers and safari enthusiasts.

The park’s breathtaking array of habitats include rainforest, grasslands, alpine bamboo and woodlands; where some 50 species of animals have been recorded, predominant among these being representatives from various monkey and ape families, and over 90 unique species of fish swim in the clear waters of the lake.

The main attraction in the Mahale Mountains NP is its population of chimpanzees. There are roughly 800 chimps in the park, and about 60 of them are very habituated to people. Your guide will take you, on foot, along the forest trails to search for them.


Best time to visit Mahale National Park


It is possible to track chimpanzees all-year-round in the Mahale Mountains NP. However, the chances of finding them improve towards the end of the Dry season (from July to October) when the chimps like to hang around the lower slopes. If you have two or three days, your chance of seeing them is reasonable at any time of the year.


Passport & Visa Requirements for entry into Tanzania

  • A passport is required for all foreign visitors and has to be valid for at least six months.
  • Passports must have a clean and a full visa page for endorsement.
  • When arriving from a yellow-fever-infected country in Africa or the Americas a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required.
  • Citizens of most countries require a visa. A list of countries that don’t need a visa is available.
  • Visas are best obtained in advance through an official online visa-application portal, but they can also be obtained through your local Tanzania Embassy or High Commission.
  • Visas can also be obtained on arrival but this is a lengthy process that can take one to two hours.

Getting to Mahale Mountains National Park


The Mahale Mountains NP might be the hardest place to get to on a Tanzania Safari. It is a costly place to get to. Depending on your itinerary, your entry point to the country will be either Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Arusha town or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam.

The best way to get to Katavi is by a flight from Arusha. The only public scheduled flight is the twice-weekly service between Ruaha, Katavi and Mahale operated by Safari Air Link.

Alternatively, Zantasair works with its sister company Mbali Mbali lodges, to offer twice-weekly shared charter flights between northern Tanzania and western Tanzania, incorporating Katavi and Mahale National Parks.
