Hiking to the Top of Murchison falls – a 5 Km guided Walk – lasts 45 minutes from the Point where you disembark the boat Safari. This is one of the top things to see & do on a safari to Murchison Falls National Park.
The Hiking safari to the top of Murchison falls is a spectacular 5 km guided hike that lasts about 45 minutes for an average hiker with reasonable fitness levels. The trail is paved except for the uneven steps along with the trail – Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has set up multiple resting points along the trail for the physically challenged hikers to take a break during the hike.
Although Hiking to the top of Murchison Falls is on a well-maintained trail, the hike can be very demanding hike compared to gorilla trekking, hikers still need to be reasonably fit to take on this adventurous hike along the River Nile.
The hiking Safari to the top of Murchison Falls traditionally starts after the Boat Safari to the bottom of falls drops you off at the hikers’ point where you find a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger waiting to accompany you on the scenic hike to the top of the falls. On this hike, you get to see another waterfall (Uhuru Falls) that was birthed out of the main Murchison Falls after River Nile flooded in 1962.
The views while on the hiking safari to the top of Murchison falls are amazing – please bring a camera so you can capture the views.
The hike to the top of Murchison falls finishes at the top of the falls where you get a close & personal view of the Nile water as it forces its way through a narrow gap (used to be 7 meters – but I guess the rocky walls have been eroded) and drops 45 meters continuing its journey into the Albert Nile and White Nile in Sudan to the Mediterranean sea where the Nile completes it 6700km journey from its source in Lake Victoria.
While many travellers only take photographs, we recommend taking a video recording – you will be amazed at the roaring sound of the Nile & the power with which the water gashes through this narrow gorge.
