Uganda Mangabey Monkey Trekking in Mabira Forest …
Uganda mangabey monkey (Lophocebus ugandae) is a species of Old World monkey found only in Uganda. This crested mangabey was previously thought to be just be a population of the grey-cheeked mangabey (L. albigena). Colin Groves upgraded the Ugandan population into the new species L. ugandae on February 16, 2007. This species is dramatically smaller than the grey-cheeked mangabey, with a shorter skull and smaller face.
Visitors to Uganda are now able to track the unique to Uganda Mangabey Monkeys (Lophocebus Ugandae) near to Kampala in the Mabira Forest which is only 45 minutes from Kampala.
The Uganda Mangabey Monkeys is primarily found in Uganda and seen places such as Lwamunda, Sango Bay and Bugoma forests and in the closest rainforest to Kampala – Mabira Forest. (some are found on the Tanzanian side of the Ugandan – Tanzanian border.
These rare Mangabey Monkeys enjoy living in forest and often found in he forest canopy, they enjoy feeding on fruits such feeds primarily on fruit, particularly figs, taking other fruits seasonally, as well as shoots, flowers and insects.
The Uganda Mangabey live in groups of 5 or more – up to 30 in number. They are territorial but often such territories overlap each other and in Mabira Forest there are two groups open for tracking
Some of the Uganda Mangabeys have been habituated. This means that they will used to Human Beings who come to visit them. Visitors are now able to track the Uganda Mangabeys much like the track Mountain Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Golden Monkeys in Uganda. (it has been reported that the Uganda Mangabey Monkeys are more habituated than previously thought.)
