Kenya was home to an estimated 20,000 black rhinos. In the last decade, an estimated 8,889 African rhinos have been lost to poaching and habitat loss. The year 2013 was the worst year for poaching in Kenya when more than 5% of the national population were killed. Ol Pejeta Conservancy
The Ol Pejeta conservancy prides itself in safeguarding over 100 critically endangered black rhinos who live on the sanctuary alongside 20 southern white rhinos.
It’s on the sanctuary that the last two remaining northern white rhinos – Najin and Fatu. However, neither of them can reproduce due to their age. In August 2019 a pioneering egg harvesting procedure was carried out in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, bring back the hope for the survival of the species – we continue to wait for outcomes.

Lewa Wildlife Conservancy
The Lewa Conservancy was founded in 1983 to provide a haven for African rhinos. Lake Nakuru National Park has more than 25 eastern black rhinoceros, one of the largest concentrations in the country, plus around 70 southern white rhinos which are often seen along the shoreline of the Pink (flamingo filled) lake.
