Planning a gorilla Habituation tour in 2024 – 2026? Uganda remains the only one place in Africa where you can go on a Gorilla Habituation experience. A Habituation Permit in Uganda costs US$1,500 for Foreign Non-Residents, US$1,000 for Foreign Residents, and Uganda Shillings – UGX750,000 for Citizens of the Seven East African Community Member States; Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Unlike Mountain Gorilla Trekking, which can be done in Uganda, Rwanda, or Congo, Gorilla Habituation is only in Uganda. The experience is currently only conducted in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (Rushaga & Nkuringo Sectors) and with a limited number of permits available on a daily. There are only 08 permits available for this experience.


Best place in Bwindi for Gorilla Habituation: Rushaga or Nkuringo?

The Rushaga Sector is the most sought-after location for most travelers going on a gorilla Habituation experience in Bwindi. 

The most prominent advantage the Rushaga Sector has over the Nkuringo Sector is the terrain. Nkuringo sector is known for its very steep slopes that make it a lot more challenging for the less fit or older persons to fully enjoy the Habituation experience.

The second advantage the Rshuaga Sector has over the Nkuringo Sector is the variety of fairly priced accommodation. Rushaga boasts of a varied list of lodging options from basic budget tented camps and small hotels to affluent midrange lodges. This makes the Rushaga sector a more preferred region for travelers considering planning/booking a budget Gorilla Habituation safari.

On the other, the Nkuringo Sector might appeal better to travelers not so bothered by the price of accommodation and are looking at enjoying a moment of a lifetime with the Gorillas while staying at luxury lodges like; Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge or Nkuringo Mountain Gorilla Lodge.

When is the best time to go on a gorilla Habituation tour in Uganda?


The best time to go on a gorilla habituation Tour in Uganda is in the dry seasons: January to February or June to September. It may be advantageous and perhaps most exciting to opt for the rainy season when the gorillas are just as present and there’s less competition to secure one of the limited gorilla permits issued per day.

What to Pack for my Gorilla Habituation Holiday to Bwindi in 2024 – 2026


  • A face Mask to protect both you and the gorillas ( see: the Best mask for gorilla trekking.)
  • Hiking Boots. Buy boots that go above your ankles – they protect you from strains.
  • Garden Gloves. These protect your hands – they are important.
  • Rain Jacket. Doesn’t matter if you are trekking in the dry or wet season.
  • Long-sleeved shirt or Blouse. The sleeves protect your arms.
  • Energy Giving snacks. You might use some extra sugar during your trek.
  • Cameras and extra batteries. Unless you don’t care to keep the memories. 
  • Hat or bandana. This covers your head and stops bugs from falling Into your hair.
  • Pair of Binoculars. You might hear the sound of a bird high up in the canopy – these come in handy.
