In this article, we explain all possible questions and concerns relating to filming In East Africa. We explain the requirements for each filming Destination; Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya & Tanzania, and also explain the procedure of fulfilling all the relevant requirements.
Filming In Uganda: What are the requirements to film in Uganda?
Prior to filming in Uganda, both individual filmmakers and or film production companies ought to secure the following;
Filming Permit / press accreditation or Media card
Press Accreditation In Uganda is issued by the Uganda Media council after each individual or crew member fills out FORM G. This form must be accompanied with copies of scanned passport (bios Page) and a recent passport-sized photo to be used in processing your Media card (Press accreditation).
It does take us approximately 02 – 03 working days from the time we receive all the above-mentioned documents to process your media card.
To accompany all the individually filled out FORM G’S for each crew member, the team leader has got to send us a detailed write-up or synopsis of the film you intend to shoot in Uganda.
After all the above is sent through, our Uganda film Crew Fixer Services team leader will then proceed to submit these to the Uganda Media Council for approval. Upon approval, we will then contact and inform you of this achievement.
After securing your Media cards, we will then need to advise and also further assist you in securing all the other necessary permits and permissions all guided by your film Scriptwriter or the Synopsis.
Press Accreditation fees in Uganda (Payable to Uganda Media Council)
- a fee of US$175 per person is paid for a period not exceeding 30 days of the journalist’s stay.
- a fee of US$225 per person is paid for a period beyond 30 days up to six months of stay.
- a fee of US$325 per person is paid for a period of two years.
** The fees mentioned above are set and can be amended by the Uganda Media Council without any prior consultation. we, therefore, remind you to treat these as a guide.
Filming In Rwanda: What are the requirements to film in Rwanda?
Before conducting any kind of filming in Rwanda, both individual filmmakers and or film production companies need to have acquired the following permits and permissions from the relevant authorities:
Press Accreditation / Rwanda filming Permit
All film /production crew members or individual filmmakers intending to filming in Rwanda MUST have Press Accreditation from the Rwanda Media High Council.
How to apply for press accreditation to Film in Rwanda
Fill in the Rwanda Press Accreditation Application Form here and also attach the following;
- Official letter requesting for accreditation addressed to the Executive Secretary;
- Two (2) coloured passport size photographs.
- A copy of the passport.
- A copy of a visa except for journalists from countries that benefit from the visa waiver e.g. journalists from the East African Community Member States, United States of America, COMESA Member states, etc;
- A copy of a press card from your country of origin.
- A receipt of payment from Rwanda Revenue Authority.
- List of Filming Equipment & Kits to be used for Filming In Rwanda.
Press Accreditation Fees to film in Rwanda
A foreign Journalist requesting an accreditation card shall pay as follows to Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA):
- 01 – 15 days Filming in Rwanda – USD30 per person.
- 15 Days – 01 month/30 Days filming in Rwanda – USD50 per person.
- 01 – 03 months filming in Rwanda – USD100 per person.
- 03 – 06 months Filming in Rwanda – USD200 per person.
- 06 Months – 01year/12 Months – USD300 per person.
