When is the best time to go fishing in Murchison falls National Park? The dry season months of December to March and June to October are considered the best time to go fishing in Murchison Falls National Park.
The fishing seasons at Murchison Falls vary from year to year, but generally, it is accepted that the dry season months of December to March and June to October – give better fishing results. These experience less or no rains at all but with chances of random thunderstorms.

What to expect in the dry months:

  • December, January & February are the driest months. It is mostly sunny with clear skies. These are also the hottest months, with average temperatures of 33°C/91°F during the afternoon. It cools off at night to about 18°C/64°F. January is particularly outrageously hot.

What to expect in the wet season:

While it doesn’t rain that much in Murchison Falls during the Wet season, a thunderstorm may occur any time.

  • March, April & May is the start of the rains. April and May experience the heaviest downpours with daytime average temperatures of 31°C/88°F and  20°C/68°F in the night.
  • June & July is somewhat a drier time, but rain should still be expected. Average daytime temperatures revolve around 30°C/86°F.
  • August, September, October & November are the wettest months, reaching a peak in October. It doesn’t rain every day, but when it does, it tends to be quite heavy. Temperatures start to slowly increase by November.

Getting to Murchison Falls for Fishing


Murchison Falls National Park is found in the Northwest of Uganda approximately a 06- 07 hours drive from Kampala. A great section of the road Leading to Murchison Falls National Park are paved but a 4 x 4 vehicle is recommended especially for persons intending to do some game drives in the northern sector of the Park whose roads are not paved and therefore can be challenging to navigate especially in the wet season months of March, April, May & November.

Opting to get to Murchison Falls National Park by road gives you the chance to stop at the amazing Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary – home to 33 White Rhinos – the only place in Uganda where you can track & see Rhinos in the Wild.

Alternatively, you could also take a flight to the park from the Entebbe airport or Kajjansi airstrip and land at Pakuba or Bugungu airfield. This saves you the 06-hour drive but you then get to miss out on Rhino Tracking unless you do a mix&match of fly to Murchison Falls NP and drive back. What to expect when fishing at Murchison falls National Park

It’s important to always remember that fishing in Murchison Falls National park is on a catch & release policy – you can take as many pictures as you wish but can’t take this to your hotel for dinner. The different fishing methods or techniques used to catch fish in Murchison Falls include casting lures, spinning and live bait fishing. The fish types you are likely to encounter while on your fishing trip to Murchison Falls National Park include; the Nile perch, Catfish, Tigerfish among others.

All anglers intending to go fishing on the Nile water of Murchison Falls National park are advised to have the following equipment: rods that are between 8 – 12 feet with a multiplier reel. If fishing for smaller species, a 7-foot spinning rod works better.
