#2) Experience a boat safari to the base of the Famous Murchison Falls

The boat safari to the base of Murchison Falls is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Murchison Falls National Park. During this 3-hour safari upstream of the mighty Nile River you are likely to spot hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffe, elephants, and lions along the river banks.

#3) Take on a boat safari to the Delta point of the Nile River

Unlike the previous boat safari upstream to the base of the Murchison Falls, this one goes downstream to the Nile Delta point where the Nile River splits into two; flowing left as Lake Albert and right as the Albert Nile. This boat trip downstream is mainly to see the shoebill Stork and other papyrus endemic bird species.

The nearby Budongo Forest (268 sq km) is a beautiful natural forest dominated by giant mahogany and ironwood trees. The forest is home to over 800 chimpanzees, about 90 of them (6 troops) are fully habituated for tourism and are available for chimpanzee trekking. Other primates you could catch a glimpse of while in the same forest include; the black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and the commonly sighted olives baboons.

The forest also has about 360 bird species of which 60 are considered West or Central African birds. Special sightings in Budongo Forest include; the chocolate-backed kingfisher, white-thighed hornbills, and the exclusively endemic Puvel’s illaposis.

#5) Indulge in Hiking to the top of Murchison Falls

The hike to the top of Murchison Falls takes approximately  45-60 minutes following the legendary Samuel Baker trail to the top of the waterfalls, from where you can view the mighty cascade from a range of angles and elevations.

#6) Hot Air Balloon Safari over Murchison Falls National Park

Dream Balloons operates a take-off Balloon Safari site on the river’s north bank, around 18km from the Lodge, and tends to fly either east towards the Murchison Falls or west towards Lake Albert, depending on the prevailing wind conditions. The balloon is fitted with an 8-passenger basket manned by an experienced pilot. Hot air balloon flights in Murchison Falls often last 45-60 minutes and include a bush breakfast at a designated spot inside the Park.

The 70 sq km Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, en route to Murchison Falls National Park, offers guided walks to get up close and personal with the last of Uganda’s white rhinos. It is a project well worth supporting.

From Nile Safari Lodge, the Zziwa Rhino Sanctuary is about 130km, making it a relatively taxing thing to do and get back to Nile Safari Lodge. However, if you will be driving In/out of Kampala to Murchison Falls National Park, then it is easy to plan a detour (07 km from the Highway) to this amazing Rhino Sanctuary.
