Best Sector to Visit on a Flying Safari to Bwindi

All four (04) sectors; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo are fun to visit however, a few things might make each sector stand out from the other.

Flying to Kihihi to Connect to Northern Sectors of Buhoma or Ruhija.

To guide your decision on whether to choose Buhoma or Ruhija

  • Buhoma is known to offer a varied range of accommodation options from very basic budget properties to some of the best Luxury lodges in Bwindi. However, Gorilla permits & accommodation in the Buhoma sector often get sold out during the peak season months of July to September & December to February. This makes it difficult or sometimes impossible for you to go to Buhoma for a last-minute gorilla trekking  Safari. If you want to trek & See Gorillas, Please book in advance.

Best Luxury Lodges in Buhoma include; Sanctuary Retreat Forest Camp, Bwindi Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs Lodge.

Things to see & don In Buhoma: Gorilla trekking(Very Popular), Batwa Pygmy walk, Buhoma Community Village Walk, Bwindi Community Hospital, Ride 4 a Women, Batwa Cultural Experience, Bwindi Forest Walk, Bird Watching, and Butterfly Watching.

Drive from Kihihi Airport to Buhoma region: 60 minutes (Ongoing upgrade of dirt road to asphalt road)

  • Ruhija Sector has the least number of accommodation options, especially for luxury travelers. For this reason, in the peak season months when all gorilla permits in Buhoma are sold out, tour operators advise the tourists to stay in buhoma and drive to trek Gorillas in Ruhija.  The drive from Buhoma to Ruhija takes about ±2 hours (one-way) and is on dirt & rugged road which require both good driving skills and a good 4×4 to navigate. However, the advantage of trekking gorillas in the Ruhija sector is that trekking is usually short and less strenuous. Making this the best Gorilla trekking region for elderly travelers.

Best Luxury Lodges in Ruhija include; There is NO luxury Lodge in the Ruhija sector

Midrange Lodges in Ruhija Sector: Ruhija Gorilla Lodge, Trekkers Tavern, Bakiga Lodge.

Flying to Kisoro to Connect to southern Sectors of Rushaga or Nkuringo.

To guide your decision on whether to choose Rushaga or Nkuringo.

  • The Rushaga region is situated in the southwestern sector of Bwindi impenetrable forest national park, this region has the highest number of 08 habituated gorilla families in the entire Bwindi Forest National park.

While this region boasts the highest number (64) of gorilla permits available on a daily, the accommodation in this area is still lucking but very promising with the recent opening of Four gorillas Lodge which has added the number of luxury lodges to two (02). Because of the limited options on where to stay especially during the peak season months of July to September and December to February tour operators advise clients to stay in the Nkuringo region but drive to trek in the Rushaga Region.

Rushaga sector exceptionally is the only place where one can spend a much longer time with a group of wild gorillas. This experience is called gorilla habituation. A gorilla habituation permit costs $1,500 per person.

Best Luxury Lodges in Rushaga include; Four gorillas LodgeGorilla Safari Lodge.

Things to see & do In Rushaga: Gorilla trekking(Very Popular), Community Village Walk,  Batwa Cultural Experience, Bwindi Forest Walk, Bird Watching, and Butterfly Watching.

  • Nkuringo region has become a favorite gorilla trekking region for travelers wanting to see the mountain gorillas on a private safari with fewer crowds. Nkuringo Region is the least crowded gorilla trekking region compared to all four locations. There are only three (03) habituated mountain gorillas that can be tracked in the Nkuringo Region However, Nkuringo is negatively-famed as the area that delivers the tough & most strenuous gorilla trekking experience of all four locations across Bwindi. This is attributed to the steep terrain.

Best Luxury Lodges in Nkuringo include; Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge, Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge & Gorilla Heights Lodge.

Things to see & do In Nkuringo: Gorilla trekking(Very Popular), Community Village Walk,  Batwa Cultural Experience, Bwindi Forest Walk, Bird Watching, and Butterfly Watching.
