East Africa is becoming a popular destination for Most travelers to Africa. However, being in the tropics, there are a number of diseases that affect the continent. Recently there was an out break of yellow fever Virus in Angola. The outbreak, which was first reported in the capital city Luanda in December 2015, has since spread to 5 of the country’s 18 provinces.
“Such outbreaks usually occur in tropical rain-forests,” explained Dr Sergio Yactayo, a Yellow fever focal point at World Health Organisation. “With the majority of cases reported in the capital city Luanda, the situation is more dangerous and difficult to contain because the disease can spread easily from one person to another. We are already seeing cases spread to a number of provinces outside Luanda.”
How is Yellow Fever Virus transmitted?
Yellow fever virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes, the most common species being Aedes aegypti – the same mosquito that spreads the Zika virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. A small percentage of infected people experience a second more severe phase of illness which includes high fever, jaundice and internal bleeding. At least half of severely affected patients who don’t receive treatment die within 10 to 14 days.
Angola is one of 34 countries in Africa where yellow fever occurs, and vaccination against the disease is highly recommended.
How far has the yellow fever Virus Spread in Africa?
Cases of yellow fever have been exported during the Angola outbreak by travelers to countries in Africa that include; Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya and Morocco. Namibia and Zambia are on high alert for imported cases.
East African Countries – Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania & Kenya have joined to fight the virus by vaccinating people. All the above East African countries as a measure to contain the Yellow Fever Virus have made it MANDATORY for all persons travelling into the country to have a Yellow Fever Vaccination certificate indicating that you took the yellow Fever vaccine at least 10 Days ago prior to Entry.
Travelers that fail to meet the above requirements will be Vaccinated at the entry point – Airport – with possibilities of being isolated if need be – to be determined by Health Authorities at the Airport.
