Where can I find gorillas in Uganda? Mountain Gorillas in Uganda can be found in two (02) locations. These are Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.


Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi Forest National Park


Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is home to more than half the world’s Mountain Gorilla population —actually, over 500 mountain gorillas live here. In Bwindi, up to 21 habituated mountain gorilla groups can be tracked in four (04) locations or sectors; Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors. On a daily, there are 168 gorilla permits available for purchase in Bwindi. A maximum of 08 tourists/visitors are allowed to trek a specific gorilla group after booking and fully paying for an official gorilla Permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

Good to know: What is a gorilla permit? A Gorilla permit/pass is an official document issued by the government of a country where mountain gorillas are found allowing the bearer (who MUST be at least 15 years of age) to legally track and see Gorillas henceforth the name ” Gorilla permit/Pass”.

When is the best time to go trekking for Gorillas in Bwindi Forest?

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda is during the dry seasons, which are June to August and December to February
Reasons why it is best to go gorilla trekking in the drier season.
  • The trails are drier and less slippery, making hiking and seeing the gorillas easier.
  • The gorillas are more active and visible during the dry season, as they venture out to feed.
  • The temperatures are cooler, ranging from 15 to 20°C (59 to 68°F).

However, as Bwindi is a tropical rainforest, you should be prepared to see at least some rain, no matter when you visit. It’s recommended that you pack high-quality waterproof gear (clothing, shoes, and backpack). 


Mountain Gorillas in Mghainga Gorilla National Park


Mgahinga unlike Bwindi only has one gorilla family. Only eight (08) gorilla permits are available for purchase on a daily. These however have to be booked and paid for in advance – at least 06 months in advance. This is so because permits are quite competitive to book and do get sold out during the peak season months of June – August, and December to February.

Good to Know: For travellers who are looking to go on a less crowded gorilla trekking experience should consider going to Mgahinga other than Bwindi. For a Family or group of friends wanting to enjoy an exclusive gorilla trekking, at only $6,400 you may be able to buy out all the eight (08) permits for the day.

Secondly, please make it a point to stay at the secluded Gahinga Lodge.
