Buhoma region is one of the four (04) designated gorilla trekking locations in the great Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. The region is very popular for gorilla trekking. matter of fact it’s in Buhoma Region that gorilla tourism started way back in 1993 with the first habituated mountain gorilla group being Mubare Gorilla Group. Buhoma region currently boasts of six (06) habituated mountain gorilla groups the free roam the lush forest. The region is also popular with tourists that are looking to trek gorillas while staying at high-end/luxury safari lodges. There is quite a variety of budget – midrange affordable lodges, including community-operated lodges that give back to the community.

What is the Driving Time to Buhoma Region (Northern Sector of Bwindi Forest)

The driving time to the Buhoma Region (Norther Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park Forests) varies depending on where your travel starts.

  • Drive time from Entebbe to Buhoma Region: From Entebbe, the drive to Buhoma Region is 498km which takes you about 9hrs 11minutes. This route follows the Entebbe – Kampala road, and joins onto Masaka road to Mbarara city, Ntungamo, and proceeds further on to Rukungiri – Kambuga – Kihihi – Butogota and finally gets you to Buhoma. While a great section of this drive is on a paved road up until you get to Rukungiri, the last section ( from Rukungiri – Kambuga – Kihihi – Butogota and finally gets you to Buhoma) is not paved and conditions of the road can worsen during the rainy season months of March, April & November – with the roads becoming slippery and sometimes impassable. We recommend hiring a functioning 4×4 vehicle together with an experienced local driver guide to help navigate this route.
  • Drive time from Kampala to Buhoma Region: From Entebbe, the drive to Buhoma Region is 465km which takes you about 8hrs 49minutes. This route follows the Kampala – Masaka road to Mbarara city – Ntungamo, and proceeds further on to Rukungiri – Kambuga – Kihihi – Butogota and finally gets you to Buhoma. While a great section of this drive is on a paved road up until you get to Rukungiri, the last section (from Rukungiri – Kambuga – Kihihi – Butogota and finally gets you to Buhoma) is not paved and conditions of the road can worsen during the rainy season months of March, April & November – with the roads becoming slippery and sometimes impassable. We recommend hiring a functioning 4×4 vehicle together with an experienced local driver guide to help navigate this route.
  • Drive time from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Buhoma Region (Bwindi): From Queen Elizabeth National Park, Buhoma Region (Northern Sector of Bwindi) is located about 4 – 5 hours drive from the Mweya Peninsular (inside QENP).  If you choose to detour and visit the Ishasha Sector (Southern sector QENP) popular for sightings of tree Climbing Lions, then be sure to even take longer to get to Buhoma. The drive time could even get better/shorter after the completion of the ongoing road works along the Kihihi – Buhoma section. A good/functioning 4×4 vehicle is recommended on this drive as sections from Katunguru – Kihihi still remains unpaved and can get very slippery during the rainy season months of April, May & November. Experience to navigate these routes is needed – we recommend hiring an experienced local tour guide to drive you on your Safari in Uganda.
  • Drive time from Lake Mburo National Park to Buhoma Region (Bwindi): Lake Mburo and Buhoma Region are only 263km apart. This takes 5hrs 31minutes before you arrive at your lodge in Buhoma Region. To get there you will follow the Mbarara – Ntugamo road, and turn left onto Rukungiri road, Kambuga – Kihihi – Butogota, and finally you will arrive at Buhoma. While a great section of this drive is on a paved road up until you get to Rukungiri, the last section (from Rukungiri – Kambuga – Kihihi – Butogota and finally gets you to Buhoma) is not paved and conditions of the road can worsen during the rainy season months of March, April & November – with the roads becoming slippery and sometimes impassable. We recommend hiring a functioning 4×4 vehicle together with an experienced local driver guide to help navigate this route.
  • Driving time to Buhoma Region from Kabale: From Kabale, Buhoam is 94kms a journey that takes about 3hrs 15minutes before you get to Buhoma. This route follows the Kabale – Kisoro road for 25km where you will turn left onto a dirt road signed “Ruhija” follow the UWA signs to Ruhija UWA offices. Continue on the same dirt road for another 2hrs before arriving at your lodge in the Buhoma Region (Northern sector of Bwindi).
  • Driving from Lake Bunyonyi to Buhoma Region: From Bunyonyi, you will drive back to join the main Kabale – Kisoro, Buhoma is 99kms a journey will take you 3hrs 30minutes before you get to Buhoma. This route follows the Lake Bunyonyi – Kabale road where you will join onto the main Kabale – Kisoro road. Take a left and drive for 25km where you will turn left onto a dirt road signed “Ruhija” follow the UWA signs to Ruhija UWA offices. Continue on the same dirt road for another 2hrs before arriving at your lodge in the Buhoma Region (Northern sector of Bwindi).
