SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Selous Game Reserve is far-flung and mostly accessed by Light aircraft Making it the perfect destination for travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-track experiences…
Considered Africa’s Largest game reserve, the Selous covers approximately 50,000Sq.km (19,000Sq.miles) of wilderness, with grassy plains, open woodland, mountains, and forests.
At the heart of the Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania’s largest river, the Rufiji, forms a complex network of channels, lakes, and swamps that create one of the most outstanding ecological systems in East Africa. This river also splits the reserve into two different sections:
- The northern Selous covers only approximately 05% of the reserve’s total area. No hunting is allowed here; this area is dedicated exclusively to photographic safaris. Virtually all of the small exclusive camps which we like to stay at are located in this area.
- The southern Selous, south of the River Rufiji, is split up into a number of ‘hunting blocks’ – each of which typically covers about 1,000km². Kindly don’t bother asking us about hunting Safaris, Realm Africa Safaris™ doesn’t offer hunting safaris.
HISTORY ABOUT THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Named after Frederick Courtney Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist, who was shot dead on the 4th January 1917 close to the Beho Beho river by a sniper whilst leading the Second World war fight against the German guerillas that presided in southern Tanzania. At the beho beho along the banks of River Rufiji close to the present day Beho beho Safari camp is where Frederick Selous body was laid to rest till to date.
