Nkuringo Region in Southern Bwindi is considered one of the best sectors for Gorilla trekking In Bwindi Forest National Park. The region currently has four (04) Mountain gorilla families; Nkuringo, Bishaho, Christmas, and Posho. Three (03) of the four (04) are fully habituated and open to tourists for gorilla trekking. Only eight (08) tourists are allowed to visit a particular gorilla group during gorilla trekking, and they are also allowed strictly one (01) with the mountain gorilla group. The posho gorilla group unlike the other three; Nkuringo, bishaho, and Christmas is still undergoing habituation (a process to familiarize it with human visits). This group can only be visited while on a gorilla habituation experience. The Gorilla habituation experience allows strictly 04 tourists in the company of a team of researchers to trek see and photograph a group of wild mountain gorillas for up to 4 hours. However, the price of a gorilla habituation permit is 1,500 per person.


How Many Gorilla Permits are available in Nkuringo Region?


As earlier mentioned above, there are only three (03) Fully habituated mountain gorilla families open for gorilla trekking in the Nkuringo region. Only 08 tourists are allowed to visit a particular gorilla group which means if you did the maths (8*3 = 24) meaning there are 24 Gorilla trekking Permits available in the Nkuringo region on a daily.

Cost of Gorilla Permits in Nkuringo Region (Bwindi):

  • $700 per person for Non Residents.
  • $600 per person for East African Residents.
  • UGX250,000 for East African Citizens.

*East Africa member states include; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania & Kenya.


When is the Best Time to Book a Gorilla Permit in Nkuringo Region (Bwindi)


As may have noticed above, there are only 24 gorilla permits available on a daily in the Nkuringo region. These could easily get sold/bought out so our recommendation is that you avoid last-minute but rather consider booking & fully paying up for your Nkuringo gorilla permits at least 06 months in advance.
