Commonly Asked Questions about fishing On Lake Victoria

  • What kind of boats do you use for your Fishing trips?

On all our fishing trips on Lake Victoria, we use 10 – 30 feet/3-9meter speedboats with outboard engines. Although are reasonably large, we like to keep the group size at a maximum of 4 persons on board at any one time to avail more fishing space and avoid line tangling and any other challenges that come with having larger groups in one boat.

  • What kind of fish should I expect to catch on my Fishing trip On Lake Victoria?

On your trip, you are most likely to catch either the Tilapia (most common) or the larger Nile perch fish, which is one of the largest freshwater fish species in the world. Another fish species that you might encounter on your trip is the catfish.

  • Which is the easiest Fish to catch on any Fishing trip on Lake Victoria?

The easiest fish to catch on any fishing trip on Lake Victoria is the Nile tilapia. It’s also the most common fish species found in Lake Victoria. However, it is important to remember that much as we mention that it is the easiest to catch, there is no guarantee you will successfully catch one yourself – it’s luck!

  • Do I bring my own fishing equipment?

For all Realm Africa Fishing trips, we do provide fishing equipment. However, should an angler want to bring their own equipment, that’s fine.

  • Can I keep/take the fish that I catch on my trip?

There are rules that govern fishing on Lake Victoria that we follow. Your local fishing guide will advise on what size you can take home with you. For insight, you may be allowed to take home the smaller sizes (less than 15 Kg) as the larger fish are considered breeding sizes.

  • When is the best time to go fishing on Lake Victoria?

The best time for fishing is during the dry months; June to August and December to February. However, we recommend that anglers avoid fishing when the moon is full and the rainy season months of April and May.
