This post is meant to compare gorilla tracking and habituation experience in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. It should be noted that gorilla tracking in Uganda started way back in as early as 1993 in the northern part of Bwindi. Mubare gorilla group was the first gorilla family to be visited or trekked by tourists. Unlike Gorilla tracking that dates back to 1993, Gorilla habituation experience is a new product only launched in 2015 and can only be done in the southern part of Bwindi in a region known as Rushaga.

Gorilla tracking or Trekking – (which ever way you wish to call it) requires a visitor to acquire a permit to go into the Forest and track or trek Gorillas. An ordinary / usual gorilla permit that allows you to trek gorillas – with 01 hour long Gorilla Viewing time costs US$600.00 in high season and US$450.00 in low season – April, May & November. Included in a gorilla permit fee (low or High season) is park entrance fee, a guide/ranger who will be with you in the forest and of course staying with gorillas for 01 hour.
Mountain gorilla habituation experience, the price US$1500 per person and inclusions are same as for gorilla tracking except that you will spend more time (usually full Day) with researchers whose work is to habituate wild mountain gorillas in addition you will enjoy up to 04 Hours of Gorilla encounter. Compare gorilla trekking and habituation in terms of time spent.Gorilla tracking will strictly allow you 01 hour viewing time with a given habituated gorilla family much as finding the gorillas might take from 30 minutes to three quarters’ of the day.
Gorilla habituation experience gives you from 04 hours to whole day experience with semi habituated mountain gorillas in Bwindi. So you get to spend more time with gorillas if you book gorilla habituation experience than gorilla trekking.
Gorilla trekking takes place in all regions of Bwindi Impenetrable National park since all four regions of Buhoma, Nkuringo, Rushaga and Nkuringo have habituated mountain gorilla families. However, Gorilla Habituation experience is restricted to 02 gorilla groups only found in the southern Bwindi sector. These gorilla groups are Bishaho in Nkuringo and Bikingi In Rushaga.
