A chimpanzee tracking permit is an official document issued by a government of a country where chimpanzees are found allowing the bearer (who MUST be at least 15 years of age) to legally track and see chimpanzees henceforth the name ” chimpanzee permit”.

  • Why do I need a permit to trek chimps?

For purposes of regulating the activity of gorilla trekking, the UWA management did introduce chimpanzee permits which every individual must acquire prior to them traveling to see the gorillas in their natural habitat. With the permits, proper statistics of both the number of tourists and revenue generated from chimpanzee tracking can be easily recorded and perhaps used for future research or marketing purposes.

  • What is the cost-Price of a Chimpanzee trekking Permit in Uganda?

The price of Chimpanzee Trekking Permits varies depending on which location you choose to visit.

Kibale Forest Chimpanzee Trekking Permits Cost;

  • $200 per person for Foreign Non-Residents.
  • $150 per person for Foreign Residents.
  • Ugx150,000 Per person for East Africans.

Kyambura gorge – Kyambura game reserve Chimpanzee Trekking Permits cost;

  • $50 per person for Foreign Non-Residents.
  • $40 per person for Foreign Residents.
  • Ugx30,000 Per person for East Africans.

Chimpanzee trekking Permits In Budongo Forest Cost;

  • Foreign Non-Residents: $120 per person- Low season or $130 per person peak season.
  • Foreign Residents: $110 per person- Low season or $120 per person peak season.
  • East African Citizens: $80 per person- Low season or $85 per person peak season.

  • How to book a Chimpanzee tracking permit in Uganda.

There are two (02) ways to reserve or book a chimpanzee tracking Permit in Uganda. You may opt to do it yourself by contacting either UWA via email or you may opt to ask us to book and arrange both the permits and the entire chimpanzee trekking trip for you. Working with a local tour operator does save you the hassle of trying to figure out things.

  • Requirements for booking a Chimpanzee tracking Permits in Uganda.

First and foremost, anyone intending to take part in chimapnzee Trekking Must be at least 15 years of age. Assuming you are of age, we will then need you to send us your proposed gorilla trekking dates. For instance, you may mention that you are interested in tracking chimps on either 3rd or 4th December 2024 – we will then contact Uganda Wildlife Authority for them to advise on the availability of chimpanzee permits for the dates you proposed to us. We will then get back to you with a response from UWA regarding whether the permits are available or not. If not we, will request that you consider changing to other dates.

Assuming there are permits for the dates you requested, we will then request you to send us a scanned copy of your Passport (Bios page) and the money for the chimpanzee permit. We will right away send our permits reservation personnel to make the payments and also secure your chimpanzee trekking permit. After all, this is done, we will send you a scanned copy of your chimpanzee tracking permit.
