    Shoebills are relatively rare to see, but visits to Mabamba Swamp have recorded a 70% success. We encourage you to exercise a lot of patience and let your local guide do the searching. You’ll thank us later.

  • What should I wear?
    • Long-sleeved shirt & trousers: It does get chilly especially in the morning so some extra clothing might help you feel warmer on your 45-minute journey to the Swamp.
    • Repellent: This is to keep any bugs and or insects away.
    • Sunscreen: This comes in handy especially on your 45-minute return trip from the Swamp when the sun is out.
    • A hat: This will help protect you from direct sun.
    • A rain jacket: The weather can be very unpredictable so we recommend bringing a rain jacket for when it starts to rain.
    • A camera (including all accessories especially batteries and extra SD cards):
    • A pair of binoculars.
    • A guidebook: We recommend bringing a personal bird guidebook, our favourite being the Birds of East Africa by Terry Stevenson.
    • A waterproof Day pack to carry all your belongings.
    • Sunglasses.

  • What about transportation?
    Realm Africa Safaris™ will typically provide transportation from your hotel or a designated meeting point in Entebbe & Kampala. Note: While all road transfers from your hotel or designated place in Entebbe are included in the Price,  transfers outside Kampala Cost EXTRA.
  • What is the price for the Half-day Shoebill tour in Entebbe?
    Tour prices vary depending on the number of persons in your group and the services included. 
    01 person – $95
    02 persons – $70 per person.
    03 persons – $65 per person.
    04 persons – $60 per person.
    05 persons – $55 per person.
    06 persons – $45 per person.
    Our tour prices include: Entry fees to Mabamba Swamp, return road transfers from your hotel in Entebbe, return water/boat transfers from Entebbe to Mabamba Swamp, snacks & drinks (Alcohol or speciality drinks cost EXTRA)
  • Are there any age or physical restrictions?

    There is currently no set age limit for tracking the Shoebill in Uganda, However, we encourage parents planning to bring their Kids on the tour to be considerate of how well their kid/child will take in the entire experience. For instance, are they able to endure the 45-minute boat trip to Mabamba Swamp? Ask yourself if they can tolerate either the rain or the scorching sun, etc. Ensure that your child doesn’t ruin your experience or that of the entire travel party. Otherwise, Realm Africa Safaris™ can arrange a family trip with kids if you like.

    The best time for shoebill tracking in Mabamba Swamp is during the drier seasons, which are typically from December to February and June to August. Morning sessions (sunrise and sunset) are generally considered more favourable for sightings.
