Last-minute gorilla permit booking can be quite costly (if available) and very frustrating (if you fail to find availability).
When is the best time to buy a Gorilla Permit?
Gorilla Trekking is currently done in only three (03) locations; Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. Of these three (03) locations, only two (02) are considered safe Places to go Gorilla Trekking. For both Uganda and Rwanda, we often advise our clients to consider booking their gorilla Permits at least 3 – 6 months in advance especially if they plan to go gorilla trekking In the peak season months of June – September or December to February. During the peak season, gorilla permits get sold out very fast and one could easily fail to get a permit which means you won’t be allowed to trek/see the gorillas even if you showed up at the trekking location.
What is a Gorilla Permit? A Gorilla permit/pass is an official document issued by a government of a country where mountain gorillas are found allowing the bearer (who MUST be at least 15 years of age) to legally track and see Gorillas henceforth the name ” Gorilla permit/Pass”.
THE PROCESS & PROCEDURE: How to buy a Gorilla Permit
Gorilla Tracking permits must be pre-booked and fully paid up at least 3 – 6 months or even a year in advance if travelling in the peak season or as a large group. While Last-minute permit bookings might be possible, especially in the low season, we strongly discourage the thought of it….as this could ruin your entire holiday.

Gorilla permits could be purchased up to two (02) years in advance from the Uganda Wildlife Authority – UWA or Rwanda Development Board – RDB. Desist from the thought of directly buying your permits, we recommend using a licensed local tour operator to assist advise and buy your gorilla Permit. These operators bring a lot of practical knowledge into the most important aspect of planning a successful Gorilla Tour. Avoid making very costly gorilla booking mistakes most beginners do.
