What to Expect: Itinerary for our Popular Half-day Shoebill tracking tour into Mabamba Swamp


Typically we will pick you up from your Hotel in Entebbe (cost included in the tour Price – but if outside Entebbe, we will charge EXTRA for transfers) and drive you to the less-known Port Alice (colonial name) popularly known to many especially locals as Nakiwogo Landing Site.

On arrival at the Nakiwogo Landing site, you will get onto a motorized canoe, and in the company of our local boat captains, you will embark on the journey to Mabamba Swamp on Lake Victoria.

The boat transfer from the Nakiwogo Landing site to Mabamba will typically last ±45 minutes (One-way) before you meet up with your local Mabamba guide who will then join us on the boat for the shoebill Tracking experience across the vast Mabamba Swamp. The guide will also point out other bird species while on the trip.

Upon finding, the shoebill stork, you will be allowed ample time to photograph this elusive bird. Thereafter you will head back to the Nakiwogo Landing site (another 45-minute transfer on water). You will then be transferred back to your Entebbe hotel marking the End of your Haf-day shoebill tracking excursion with Realm Africa Safaris™

The best time to go Shoebill Tracking is during the drier season months of December – February, and June – August. Both morning and afternoon Shoebill Tracking Sessions can be rewarding, however, we recommend doing it in the morning when the temperatures are a lot cooler.

Afternoon trips to Mabamba can also be rewarding however, the temperatures might be warmer with the sun overhead thus making it less enjoyable. If you choose to go in the afternoon, we recommend wearing/bringing a cap/hat, and sun cream for extra protection.

  • Long-sleeved shirt & trousers: It does get chilly especially in the morning so some extra clothing might help you feel warmer on your 45-minute journey to the Swamp.

  • A hat: This will help protect you from direct sun.
