Bulago, a ‘Luganda’ word to mean ‘neck’ because of its neck-like formation, is the first island in Lake Victoria to be developed exclusively for leisure use. The Island has some excellent beaches owned by local and expatriate residents and professionals.
Bulago Island is one of the several scenic islands on Lake Victoria, located east of Entebbe International Airport. The Island has been equated to approximately 500 acres of paradise away from the hustle and bustle of city life. with approximately six (06) kilometers of white sandy beaches and an extension of about 10km of shoreline that is mainly made up of rocks and low cliffs creating a feeling of serenity and peace; making it a perfect vacation spot for weekend getaways or even honeymoon Vacations.
Bulago Island island has several resorts but one that stands out is the Pineapple Bay resort, the most beautiful resort on this Island. Bulago offers brilliant lakeside views, and a sunbath, is perfect for water sports, jogging around the island, horse-riding, and hiking trails, and is also an excellent base for bird-watching as the island is home to approximately 200 bird species. This vast range of birds is simply dazzling – even to non-twitchers. Otters play along the shores, and the nature trails provide wonderful opportunities for observing nature at her best.
Things to see & Do while at Bulago Island
- If you wish to indulge in active adventure, there are several things to see and do on Bulago Island. You can choose to go fishing in Lake Victoria and you will be sure that you will catch some fish. The commonly caught fish in this lake is the Nile Perch which is the largest freshwater fish in Africa.
- You can go on a boat cruise too but this has to be arranged prior. The boat cruise can be a sun-downer cruise on the Lake and that is really an amazing adventure. It can be a morning or an evening cruise depending on what time you wish to do it. At the end of the cruise, you will return to the resort and have some refreshing fruit drinks or any other kind that you want.
- Taking a nature walk is another activity that you can go for. This walk takes you through the forests as well as through the savannah grasslands and at the same time as this walk, you can enjoy the bird-watching adventure. You can expect to see birds like the open-billed storks, cattle egrets, yellow-billed ducks, herons, and Egyptian geese, among others.
