The Nyakagezi Mountain Gorilla Family is currently the only habituated Mountain gorilla family group in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. Only 08 gorilla Permits are available in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park – each permit costs $700 per person.
The Nyakgezi Mountain Gorilla family settled in the Mgahinga after its periodic movements between the Uganda – Rwandan and the Democratic Republic of Congo borders. This group is considered the easiest Mountain gorilla group to trek In Uganda as it often roams in low areas, with abundant food and therefore moves within short distances – however, before gaining permanent settlement in the “Garden of Eden (Mgahinga Gorilla Park) – Full of abundant food supply all year round – good security – ongoing Gorilla Conservation, however, not until six (11 years ago (2012) that the Nyakagezi Mountain gorilla family group was very unpredictably hard to trek as it kept migrating back and Forth Between the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and DR. Congo – This has however changed, the gorillas are back on the Ugandan side
The Nyakagezi Gorilla group is currently selling like a hot cake for Gorilla tour operators in neighboring Rwanda since Mgahinga gorilla permits cost $700, unlike Rwanda Gorilla permits which cost $1500.
The family group presently consists of 10 members under the leadership of the dominant / silverback, Mark and some of the other members include; Mathew, Nshuti, Baby Rukundo, Mutagamba, Nvuyekure, Mark and Bugingo, Marfia, Ndungutse, Nyiramwiza, Furraha, and Nkanda.
Bugingo who is about 54 years old, was the former leader of the group and was later dethroned by Mark but unlike other gorilla family groups, Bugingo and Mark co-exist in the same family group without any disagreements between them.
Mgahinga Gorilla Park is one (01) of two (02) Places you can see Mountain Gorillas in Uganda – the Park lies in proximity to Rwanda’s Kigali International Airport meaning you can Fly into Kigali and Trek Gorilla in Mgahinga Gorilla Park – Gorilla Permits in Mgahinga cost $600, unlike Rwanda Gorilla Permits that cost a whopping $1,500 which the cost of a 3 Day Gorilla & Golden Monkey Trekking Safari in Mgahinga Gorilla Park.
