KYAMBURA GORGE – Queen Elizabeth National park ,Uganda – “The Valley of Apes”
Kyambura gorge (or Chambura) is an astonishing piece of natures art located in the far flung eastern corner of of Uganda’s most popular national Park – Queen Elizabeth.
Kyambura gorge is situated inside the Kyambura game reserve (156 sq. km) which is a buffer zone for the main Queen Elizabeth National park. The gorge is approximately 1 km wide and round about 100m deep, and stretches through a distance of up-to 11km joining the popular Kazinga Channel. The Kazinga channel provides for the constant water flow of River Kyambura that flows through the gorge and Is a major source of water for all the gorge dwellers.
The gorge is home to Queen Elizabeth National park’s only habituated chimpanzees and other types of primates including red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, baboons and vervet monkeys probably the reason its called ” the valley of Apes” . Most popularly visitors to Kyambura come for chimp trekking experience and only take on other activities as an “Add-on”. Among the other things to do and see in Kyambura gorge is;
