When do I need a filming Permit?

If your production Or shoot is for commercial purpose i.e is intended for profit and sale – whether it is still Photographs, motion or digital, for print, TV, theatres or even use over the Internet, you are required to obtain a permit prior to beginning shooting.

In many cases, even if your project is for non-profit (non-commercial) or educational filming, you may still require a film permit – although this depends on the laws of the country of destination in which you want to shoot in.

If your project has no commercial value – it’s something that you’re shooting for your own (and friends’) enjoyment without any large, professional equipment, you probably don’t need a permit.

Where do I get filming permits?

Every country has some sort of council or office that handles the issuance of filming permits. Obtaining film permits is part of the process of location scouting – which is usually the work of the location manager.

The process of applying for filming permits often does include payment of fees to governing authorities. The process of film permitting can often make it difficult for independent and amateur filmmakers to successfully secure the relevant permits & permissions. It is at this point that we recommend working with a local film crew fixer like Realm Africa Safaris™ or others of your choice. ( See: How to choose a local Film Crew Fixer company)

Filming in large cities is generally more tightly controlled. Less populated areas may waive fees or have looser requirements and regulations, either because filming is less frequent, or because they hope to attract more film production into the area.

How long would the film permit take to get processed?

This varies from place to place. For example, we have in the past been able to secure filming permits for a crew of 10 members who were coming to film mountain gorillas in Uganda in just 3 days. However, we recommend allowing ample time depending on the magnitude of your shoot.
